July 20, 2015 ---- On the way back to Munich from Paris, Nathan and I made a stop in a small town called "Strasbourg" located near the border between Germany and France. In brief, Strasbourg was founded and occupied by the Romans way back in 12 BC. Later, in the 17th Century, the Holy Roman Empire lost Strasbourg to France. Then the German and the French fought over this land for a long time, but finally the French won.
Nathan and I really enjoyed our visit to Strasbourg. It's one of the most beautiful towns in Europe I have ever seen. As we arrived at the train station, we stored our luggage in a locker there and found the Tourist Information Office located right inside the station. We bought a city map and planned to rent an audio tour of the city, but they said we had to go the another Tourist Office located next to Maison Kammerzell and rent the audio tour from there, which was where the tour begins anyway.
The audio guide cost €5.50 for a use of 3 hours. You'll have to leave an ID as a security deposit and get it back once you return the audio machine. I would say that 3 hours are enough to see everything according to the audio guide. The town isn't that big, so you can walk slowly or even walk off the path a bit to enjoy some scenery that isn't included in the tour path. Nathan and I went up on Barrage Vauban and got the best view of the city from there!
After returning the audio machine, we went to Rohan Palace where three museums were housed. A combo ticket for all 3 museums wasn't expensive at all. Really worth 2 hours strolling around there!
At dinner we went to Au Quai de L'ILL for a heavy, hearty meal. Most restaurants in Strasbourg don't serve dinner till 6 p.m. or after, so we could only order drinks and an appetizer and had to wait to order dinner later. The Flammkuchen was really delicious! We got a traditional one. My steak was also very tasty. Even though I ordered it well-done, it was tender and juicy. Great food and good service. I highly recommend this place if you visit Strasbourg.
